  3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This course is an introduction in the study of law enforcement and policing in America. It will explore diversity and critically evaluate the direction and trends in modern police agencies. The student will become familiar with the names, phrases, and concepts that are routinely used by those in the study of crime and the workings of the criminal justice system. This is a three credit hour course.

  4. COURSE RATIONALE / TRANSFERABILITY

    This course is designed to provide information to those students who may be considering a career in the criminal justice field or a profession that supports one or more aspects of the criminal justice system. Students should check with their advisor / counselor to determine whether courses are transferable to other institutions.

    Module 0: 105points
    Chapter Assignments/Exam (15) 42 points each chapter = 630

    These assignments will be completed (required) in MindTap. In canvas, on the Course Information Module, there are links and a step by step guide to how to navigate and get there. I will manually transfer grades into canvas from there.

    Weekly Discussions (50ea): 400points
    These will be completed in Canvas under Weekly Modules.

    Final Project: 200points

    This will be completed in Canvas in Final Module Shell.

    At the conclusion of this course, a student should have a basic knowledge of how the criminal justice system operates and a general understanding of how different areas of the criminal justice system work, such as: policing, the courts, corrections, juvenile justice and theories of criminology and the law.
    The course content of Introduction to Criminal Justice (CJ113) supports NMJC’s mission of “promoting success through learning” by encouraging students to accomplish the following:
    • Identify and recognize the stages within the criminal justice system.
    • Identify and articulate the roles of individuals within the criminal justice system.
    • Identify and communicate the rights of defendants in the criminal justice system.
    • Analyze the significance of key court cases that have influenced the criminal justice system.
    • Apply each of the above in context of developing an awareness of self and community.

  9. SPECIFIC COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

    1. Be able to list the three early issues of American Policing.

    2. Know the major functions of the four primary law enforcement agencies within the Department of Justice.

    3. Describe the basic elements of the communications process.

    4. Describe the primary functions and styles of policing.

    5. Recognize the nature and importance of the traffic function in patrol work.

    6. Summarize some means by which COPPS can address neighborhood disorders, domestic violence, and juvenile problems.

    7. Be able to distinguish between Forensic Science and Criminalistics.

    8. Outline the protections afforded citizens by the fourth, fifth, and sixth amendments.

    9. Define Bias-Based policing.

    10. Explain how police officers may be held criminally liable for their misconduct.

    11. Know the types and organization of gangs, and how gang graffiti affect our quality of life.

    12. Explain the nature and extent of youth crime and violence.

    13. Know the major causes of police stress and some means of coping with it.

    14. Discuss how technology assists police in their traffic and gang suppression functions.

    15. Identify the major future challenges in crime involving drugs, alcohol, guns and computers.

  11. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    Students,

    Module 0 will be due the 1st Thursday of the semester so you I can report Non-Attendance by Friday morning so it is IMPORTANT for you to complete Module 0 before Friday morning.

    After you have read the syllabus, please be sure to click on the link to the left titled "Modules". You will need to use these modules to keep you updated in the course. You can find all you need in there for each section.

    Please be sure to e-mail me ASAP if you have any problems or concerns. Thank you! Email Response time is 24 hours and grade response time is 1 week.

    You must also use word to submit your assignments or save it as a .RTF file if you are using Wordperfect. I can not download the assignments from any other format.

    Be sure when you answer your questions, you refer to the Grading Rubric included in your assignment, which will explain the Assignment Expectations. I also expect each of you to cite your references. This does not have to be a big issue or something hard, but merely (Author or website, and page number) where you located the information to support your own personal ideas. With that being said, I also expect you to use something, such as the textbook, online websites or other court or law references to support your personal ideas. The discussions should be your personal “feelings” documented one way or another with another type of resource. Do not answer the questions by saying, “I think …” and leave it as that. Each question must be thoroughly explained. In some instances, it may take one paragraph and in others, it may take one page. There is no magic number or guide as to how long it should be.

    Response Times for E-mail and Grading in this Course:

    E-mail will be responded to within 24 hours.
    Assignments and exams will be graded and grades will be posted by the end of the day on Sunday of next week.

    Attendance Policy and Participation Expectations
    It is expected that you regularly log into class at least three times weekly and check your Canvas mail to ensure you have not missed any changes/updates. Students are expected to complete discussions/quizzes/tests/ assignments before deadlines expire.

    Netiquette
    The professor is responsible for monitoring and evaluating student conduct and student behavior within the Canvas course. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to log into the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class and dropped for the semester.     Plagiarism
    Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

    Tutoring Assistance
    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located in Mansur Hall room 123 and 124.

    Withdrawal Policy
    The instructor has the right to drop any student who has failed to log on to Canvas for two weeks or more, but it is not guaranteed that the instructor will drop you. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017. Failure to withdraw yourself from a course by this date may result in your receiving an “F” in the course. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.
