    This course is a continuation in skills formation, technique, and expressive development studied in Painting I. The student will be encouraged to develop paintings that focus on a personal area of interest while applying the concepts presented in class. This is a three credit hour course. Prerequisite: AR 213A Painting I


    This second level painting course is designed to help the student continue his/her development of creative expression, painting techniques, methods, and refine his/her skills. Please note, it is the student's responsibility to verify the transferability of this course to another school or institution. Although transferability is likely, it is not guaranteed.




    Most of the supplies may be purchased at the NMJC Bookstore to ensure you are getting correct suppliesOr, you can also find supplies at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, online, etc.  (You can find coupons online for Hobby Lobby and Michaels.)

    We will discuss supplies the first day of class.  If you do not go to the NMJC bookstore, wait to buy items until you are sure what you need.  If you already have some painting supplies, but they aren’t exactly what I have listed, bring them for me to see.  You may be able to use them.

    Required Supplies

    1.    Palette - Need large area for mixing in middle—not tiny “bowls”.  Old microwave’s glass tray, white metal butcher tray, white plastic palette, or glass cut from auto-glass shop all work well.  (NMJC Bookstore, Hobby Lobby, etc.)

    2.    Canvas panels or stretched canvases (11x15) (NMJC Bookstore, Hobby Lobby, etc.)

    3.    (3-6) Brushes – Do not buy in value pack plastic packages.  They are usually cheap quality, lose hairs, and won’t perform well.

    You will need these 3 right away:

    These may be purchased a little later, but get as soon as possible:

    ·         6340 Wildlife Eye Bob Ross or a #2 soft hair brush/short hair only (Hobby Lobby, etc.)

    ·         #10 (bright or flat; boar bristle) Feels rough, not silky (Hobby Lobby – Master Touch, etc.)

    ·         #6 (bright or flat; boar bristle) (Hobby Lobby - Master Touch 400F/Flat or Bright, etc.)        

    4.       Acrylic Paint Liquitex (NMJC Bookstore or Hobby Lobby) Buy name brands only; not store brands.  (You will not be able to mix the colors required in class with cheap store brands.)

    ·         First colors needed: Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna

    ·         Next colors needed (in order):  Cadmium Yellow Medium, Naphthalol Red or Cadmium Red Deep, Cadmium Red Light

    5.      Color wheel (NMJC bookstore, Hobby Lobby, etc.)

    6.      Gray scale (NMJC Bookstore)

    7.      Palette knives - can wait until later, but buy a metal set (Hobby Lobby, etc.)

    8.      Gum eraser and/or good white eraser (Hobby Lobby, etc.)

    From Home

    1.      2 large water containers (I have several in our classroom to lend.)

    2.      Paper towels (Use a good brand that won’t leave paper on your canvas when wiping off paint.  My favorite is Bounty select-a-size.)

    3.      Pencil (B or #2)

    4.      Wear an apron or clothing that you don’t mind getting “painted.” (Acrylic does not wash out of clothing easily.) 

    5.      Optional:  Thin plastic gloves; just makes cleaning your hands easier.

    If you order online from these suppliers, you will normally receive them within a week, but sometimes longer.



    You can buy your books online at the NMJC Bookstore.


    Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:

    						90 - 100%	=	A
    						80 -  89%	=	B
    						70 -  79%	=	C
    						60 -  69%	=	D
    					 	 0 -  59%	=	F


    Students’ grades will be earned according to the following rubric:

    4.      Completed painting

    Finished painting shows attention to concepts and techniques discussed, as well as demonstration of creativity and detail.  The painting looks “finished”—taken as far as this painting should go.



    5.      Critique

    Participated in class critique – classmates’ paintings, as well as self



    ·         Students will complete 1-2 small paintings per week (100 points each).  Time will be provided in class, but students will be expected to complete some paintings at home when needed.  Grades will be assigned according to the criteria above.


    1.    Grading Schedule:  Paintings are normally graded the day they are submitted.

    2.    Course Grades:  Students may view their grades and their current average in class through the Canvas Gradebook, which averages the scores as soon as each grade is posted.  The standard NMJC grading scale is utilized.  Final Grades can also be seen through NMJC’s T-Bird Web-Portal (see website).

    3.    Canvas Messages (use Inbox) – Students can expect me to reply to Canvas messages within 24 hours, Monday – Friday (noon).


    Late work will only be considered under unusual circumstances, deemed unavoidable by the professor, such as an emergency. Students must contact me within ONE WEEK of a missed deadline in order to have a late assignment or make-up test considered. Late work is noted and will not be accepted on a recurring basis.  Points will be deducted.


    If you are having difficulty at any time during the semester, please contact me as soon as possible.  I will be happy to discuss possible solutions with you.  If you feel you may need to withdraw from the course, please discuss it with me, first.  A student who is unable to successfully complete the course must submit the proper paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by the deadline, or is in jeopardy of receiving an “F”.  Please note that it is the student’s responsibility to do so, not the instructor’s.

    However, when a student misses the equivalent of 4 weeks of class (8 classes), it is likely that I will drop the student without notice. This is especially true if the student has not remained in contact with me. When dropped from the course, a student will not be able to return and will not receive credit for the class.

    Academic Honesty
    Each student is expected to maintain the highest standards of honesty and integrity in online academic and professional matters. The College reserves the right to take disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal, against any student who is found guilty of academic dishonesty or otherwise fails to meet these standards. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, dishonesty in quizzes, tests, or assignments; claiming credit for work not done or done by others; and nondisclosure or misrepresentation in filling out applications or other College records.     Attendance Policy
    Attendance is required at every session of each course for which the student is enrolled. When unavoidable circumstances make attendance impossible, students must provide a satisfactory explanation of their absences to their professors. College-sponsored activities are considered excused absences and the appropriate sponsor of those students who will be absent from class will notify professors. Students having absences due to college-sponsored activities will need to make arrangements with the affected classes / professor to take care of required work; however, arrangements for make-ups should be made within a reasonable time frame, usually within one week of the absence. Regarding make-up work, absences due to late registration are considered the same as regular absences.

    Cell Phones/Pagers
    All cell phones and pagers must be turned off when the student is participating in any lecture, laboratory, or other learning activity.

    Classroom Conduct
    The professor is responsible for maintaining a class environment best suited for effective learning. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to attend the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class.

    Food and Drink Policy
    Food items and soft drinks may not be consumed in NMJC classrooms. Students are also discouraged from bringing food and drink items into the classroom even though these items remain in sealed packaging. Bottled water is permissible.

    No Children in the Classroom
    In order to adhere to instructional procedures as well as maintain the safety of children, NMJC’s policy of no children in the classrooms (lecture, lab, etc.) will be followed.

    Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

    Smoking/Use of Tobacco
    New Mexico Junior College is cognizant of the health hazards associated with smoking / use of tobacco for the smoker, as well as the non-smoker. In an effort to provide a healthy environment for students, employees, and others who may frequent the campus, NMJC prohibits smoking / use of tobacco inside any campus building or facility.

    Tutoring Assistance
    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located in Mansur Hall room 123 and 124.

    Withdrawal Policy
    Regular, punctual attendance is required for all classes at NMJC. Although the professor has the right to drop any student who has missed the equivalent of 2 weeks of instruction (based on a 16 week semester) whether it’s a face to face, online, or a hybrid course, it is not guaranteed that the professor will drop the student. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.


    The focus of the class will include materials, techniques, and information to help the Painting II student move forward in confidence and skill. Both group and individual instruction will be provided.

    Each class will normally begin with instruction and demonstration of how to proceed in painting each of the following subjects. Students will then work on their own individual paintings while the instructor provides suggestions during the progression of the paintings. Generally, one painting will be completed each week. Painting II students will be given an additional week (1 painting every 2 weeks) if the paintings are larger than average and/or more detailed. The time-line and number of paintings for the semester will be discussed throughout the semester with the Painting II student.

    The Painting II student will discuss individual goals for the semester--what the student wants to paint and areas where he/she would like to improve. With the instructor's support and involvement, students will work on paintings throughout the semester to help develop those skills and to practice and achieve their goals for successful paintings. If desired, the student may follow the same course outline as the Painting I students (available in class), but will implement their own individual goals as the paintings are completed.

    Painting II student should turn in a Personal Painting Plan by the second week of class. By the 4th week of class, each student should also provide a Power Point of at least one artist's work that you admire. Explain what you like and appreciate about their work. Set an appointment to show your Power Point in class.

    Finals Week

    Your final exam will be to create a painting, that demonstrates skills and techniques you have developed during the semester. The student will choose the subject, which will then need to be approved by the instructor. Plan to paint from life, or from a photograph that you have taken. If you cannot find a photograph you have taken that you like, then several photographs can be utilized to create a composition that is original. In other words, the Final Exam cannot be painted using another person's photograph or painting.

    On the day of you Final Exam (see dates in preceding section of this syllabi and the NMJC website), we will complete studio “clean up”, share your finished paintings, and show your painting portfolio Power Point (pictures painted over the semester, in order). Power Points or photographs in a notebook are both acceptable, but computer generated presentations are recommended. Painting II students should continue the Power Point completed in Painting I (if course was taken at NMJC).
