This is a general course on art appreciation. Open to all college students, it covers the analysis of art elements and principles as applied to various forms of visual expression including painting, drawing, sculpture, and architecture. This course will develop for the student awareness and appreciation of art through film and video, presentations, classroom assignments, and active student participation in class discussions. This is a three credit hour course.
This is a general course in art appreciation, which may transfer to schools offering similar programs. It is recommended that the student check with the receiving institution if they intend to transfer.

Early Alert at NMJC:
Students will receive graded feedback on an introductory discussion, Student profile , and academic honesty assignment within the first two weeks of class. Grades will be posted in the course Canvas course shell by the end of the second full week of class.
Grading is based on participation in weekly on-line class discussions and in the submission of assignments. (1100 possible points)

All assignments are due on the due date. Only in extreme emergency situations and with the teachers approval may missed work be made up.
Grades are averaged using a point system as explained in each assignment.
90 - 100 = A
80 - 89 = B
70 - 79 = C
60 - 69 = D
0 - 59 = F
Course requires a final exam.

New Mexico Junior College’s institutional student learning outcomes represent the knowledge and abilities developed by students attending New Mexico Junior College. Upon completion students should achieve the following learning outcomes along with specific curriculum outcomes for respective areas of study:
Through participation in the course the student should develop an understanding and appreciation of the arts through processes including identification, description, analysis and expression of personal views and interpretations of art.
Students will analyze and critically interpret significant and primary texts and/or works of art (this includes fine art, literature, music, theatre, and film.)
Students will compare art forms, modes of thought and expression, and processes across a range of historical periods and/or structures (such as political, geographic, economic, social, cultural, religious, and intellectual).
Students will recognize and articulate the diversity of human experience across a range of historical periods and/or cultural perspectives.
Students will draw on historical and/or cultural perspectives to evaluate any or all of the following: contemporary problems/issues, contemporary modes of expression, and contemporary thought.
At the completion of the course it is expected the student should:
• evaluate criteria that define art
• be acquainted with the functions and purposes of art in various world civilizations
• have developed an understanding of how art is part of our existence and how art-making is intrinsic to human nature
• have become aware of the philosophy of aesthetics
• use terminology to describe the characteristics of works of art
• identify the visual elements as the foundation of an artwork
• built a vocabulary of art with the ability to verbalize what is seen in works of art
• Develop knowledge about how an artist can utilize the visual elements to portray an idea, evoke a feeling, and appeal to the viewer
• evaluate and criticize artwork in the text and in their surroundings both now and through life
• have a greater awareness of careers within the art world

Attendance Policy and Participation Expectations
It is expected that you regularly log into class at least three times weekly

deadlines expire.

Netiquette
The professor is responsible for monitoring and evaluating student conduct and
student behavior within the Canvas course. By registering for this class, the
student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior
College and the professor to log into the class regularly and to behave in an
appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may
result in the student being removed from the class and dropped for the semester.

Plagiarism
Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

Withdrawal Policy
The instructor has the right to drop any student who has failed to log on to Canvas for two weeks or more, but it is not guaranteed that the instructor will drop you. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2017. Failure to withdraw yourself from a course by this date may result in your receiving an “F” in the course. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.
