Law Enforcement Academy Entrance Requirements
- You must be a citizen of the United States and have reached the age of majority
prior to entry into the academy. The age of majority is 18 years of age. If
you are under the age of 21, it is suggest that you contact Academy personnel
for pertinent information;
- you may either be sponsored by a law enforcement agency or you may be self-sponsored;
- you must hold a high school diploma or the equivalent at the time of entry;
- you must hold a valid driver's license;
- you must have not been convicted or pled guilty to or entered a plea of
nolo contendere to any felony charge or, within the three-year period immediately
preceding your application, to a violation of any federal or state law or
local ordinance relating to aggravated assault, theft, driving while intoxicated,
controlled substances or other crimes involving moral turpitude and has not
been released or discharged under dishonorable conditions from any of the
armed forces of the United States;
- you must have not been convicted of any crime involving family violence
which violates the 1996 Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban Federal Statute;
- after examination by a licensed physician, you must be free of any physical
condition that might adversely affect your performance as a police officer
or prohibit you from successfully completing a prescribed basic law enforcement
training program as required by the Law Enforcement Training Act;
- after examination by certified psychologist, you must be free of any emotional
or mental condition that might adversely affect your performance as a police
officer or prohibit you from successfully completing a prescribed basic law
enforcement training program;
- you must be of good moral character;
- you must be subjected to a fingerprint search/check;
- you must have a thorough background investigation conducted;
- you must successfully complete the Law Enforcement Officer Certification
Examination for state certification. This exam will be administered during
the last week of the academy.
