General Program Information
The Southeastern New Mexico Law Enforcement Training Academy (SNMLETA) program is a New Mexico state-approved course of basic training for law enforcement officers. The course of instruction prepares you for police officer certification by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Board.
SNMLETA abides by all laws as established by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Act, Chapter 29, Article 7 NMSA 1978, and will follow all Rules and Regulations as set by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Board.
The Academy provides an intensive training program that meets or exceeds all requirements set by the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Training Center for becoming a police officer in the State of New Mexico.
You may either be sponsored by a law enforcement agency or you may be self-sponsored. Law enforcement agencies do recruiting during every class and some unsponsored cadets are hired while still attending the academy. Federal financial aid via Veterans Assistance is currently available for this program. The Department of Labor may also be a source of funding through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA).
SNMLETA conducts two academy programs a year, one in January and the other in July. The program includes 800 hours of instruction (22 weeks) and emphasizes high academic standards. All classes are scheduled to meet for 40 hours per week. Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some evening classes will be required. Classes meet on the New Mexico Junior College campus. Firearms training is conducted at the Hobbs Police Department indoor range and outdoor tactical training facility. Defensive tactics training is conducted at Caster Center on NMJC campus. Officer survival training is conducted at several tactical training facilities located off campus. Drivers training is conducted at the Hobbs Industrial Air Park.
Law Enforcement Academies are held in January and July. For specific academy schedules/dates email us at cj@nmjc.edu.
