Fire Science Academy
The Southeastern New Mexico Fire Academy is a full-time training program structured around competencies required for service as a fire officer. All instructional areas are taught by experienced and certified personnel including line officers, supervisors, fire science practitioners, and other state certified professional trainers in topical areas.

- Basic Fire Fighting
- Fire Fighting I
- Fire Investigation and Arson Detection
- Wildland and Vehicle Fire Control
- Fire Fighting II
- Hazardous Materials
- Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting
- Physical Training and Wellness
The academy is 13 weeks in length. All classes are scheduled to meet for 40 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some evening classes will be required. The majority of classes meet on the New Mexico Junior College campus with some peripheral training occurring at various off-campus sites. All graduates of the Fire Academy will receive 29 college credit hours (Fire Science) which may be applied toward the completion of either an AA or AAS degree as well as certifications through the New Mexico Firefighters Training Academy.
You may either be sponsored by a fire department or you may be self-sponsored. Federal financial aid via Veterans Assistance and/or Department of Labor Workforce Investment Act may be available for this program.
