Corrections Academy

Corrections Academy Physical Fitness Standards

On the first day of the Academy each student will be required to participate in four physical fitness standard tests as listed. Students must meet the minimum entry standards to be accepted to the Basic Training Program. If a student is unable to obtain a passing score they may be dismissed from the Academy.

Cadets will be tested in the following areas for admission to the academy:

Students will participate in an on-going physical fitness program which will be scheduled four days per week. In most cases fitness training will be done as a group and will be conducted in the mornings. All students are expected to apply their maximum effort during physical fitness training, as will at all other times.

Rockport Walk

***Ensure that a medical professional is on hand to take pulse at the appropriate time***

Step 1. Complete the Agility Form with the candidate's name, age, and weight.

Step 2. The potential cadet briskly walks (without running or jogging) a mile in whatever setting you ordinarily set up. If you have many candidates, stagger their starting times so that they do not finish all at one time.

Step 3. Upon completion of the brisk walk, the medical professional takes the candidate's pulse rate.

Step 4. Go to the chart called Fitness Score provided by the State of New Mexico. On the left side, you will see "15 Sec. Pulse Score". In that column, find the pulse score that the candidate scored after their walk. Then, look at the bottom of the page where it says "Body Weight". Find the weight of the candidate you are scoring. Then, follow the column where the candidate's weight falls closest to and go upward until you meet the column where their pulse score is, and that is their final score.

Step 5. Take the score and go to the Final Score Page. Find the score that is closest to the candidate's score. Then, on the left side, find the candidate's age (closest to). Then follow the age column until you meet the column that has their score from previous page. This gives the FINAL SCORE for the Agility Form.

For example:

Joe Schmoe is 23 and weighs 200 pounds.

His pulse rate after the walk is 35. Look at Fitness Score page and look up his pulse rate (35), and weight (200 pounds). The score is 42.

On the Final Score page, find the coordinating column for the age of 23 (which is closer to 25) and see that the final score is 42.
