The Southeastern New Mexico Corrections Training Academy program is a New Mexico state-approved course of basic training for correction officers. The course of instruction prepares you for correction officer certification by the New Mexico Department of Corrections.
The Academy provides an intensive training program that meets or exceeds all requirements set by the New Mexico Department of Corrections for becoming a correction officer in the State of New Mexico.
You may either be sponsored by a correction agency or you may be self-sponsored. Federal financial aid via Veteran Assistance is currently available through the New Mexico Junior College financial aid office. You may also be able to receive financial assistance through the Department of Labor, or the Work Force Investment Act (WIA).
The Corrections Academy starts an academy class every 10 weeks. The program consists of 320 hours of instructions (8 weeks) and emphasizes high academic standards. All classes are scheduled to meet for 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Occasionally students may have to attend some evening classes. Cadets will receive 10 NMJC semester credit hours for course work. This work may be applied toward the Associate in Applied Science or the Associate of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice offered at New Mexico Junior College.
Most of the training is conducted on the campus of New Mexico Junior College. Firearms training takes place at the NMJC Bob Moran classroom and the Lovington Police shooting range. Defensive Tactics and Officer Safety are conducted at Caster Activity Center on the NMJC campus.
For current schedule information please contact Ms. Raquel Edwards at the Department of Criminal Justice by email, phone (575.392.1771), or in person.
Recruiting is done in every class and some cadets are hired while still attending the academy.
